민물장어의 꿈 Freshwater Eel’s Dream – 신해철 Shin Hae Chul Guitar Tab

In a June 2010 interview, the late Shin Hae Chul said of Freshwater Eel’s Dream: “This song will be played at my funeral and the lyrics will be on my epitaph.”

Found on Shin Hae Chul’s second solo album, “Homemade Cookies & 99 Crom Live”, 민물장어의 꿈 (romanised: Minmuljang-eo-e kkum) was his personal favourite song. In the same interview, he lamented it was a shame that the song remained unnoticed but he knew that it would become popular after his death.

True enough, the song did top the music charts after his unexpected death in October 2014.

When I first heard the song, it did not immediately resonate with me. However, it became meaningful when I found out more about Shin Hae Chul and the story around the song. After doing a deeper study into the lyrics, it become apparent to me why Shin Hae Chul was attached to the song.

The lyrics seems to speak of Shin Hae Chul’s struggles at the start of his musical career. He, of course, became an influential figure and musician in the Korean rock scene but was made to fit into a pop idol mould when he first made his debut as a solo artiste.

Freshwater Eel’s Dream

There’s only one way
To enter the narrow door
All I can do is to make myself smaller
By cutting and tearing down myself

Just when I think that
I have nothing left to lose
I suddenly look in the mirror
And I realise that I have yet to lose my pride

The hometown I left behind, the people that I miss
And those warm dinners and laughter
I shake my head to forget it all
Then I hear someone calling me
To go without a break

Where the river meets
Deep down under the angry waves
If only I could get there at least once
I’ll sob and laugh
Until my heart bursts someday
And I’ll put an end to a long journey
Without any regret

I’m getting used to my hard bed
It creates another sanctuary
And even that scares me
My embarrassing laziness and petty greed
How old do I have to be
For my heart to find peace?

We bear the weight of solitude
Growing heavier day by day
Because we’re scared of being
Meaninglessly forgotten which is
Harder and sadder

Where the river meets
Deep down under the angry waves
If only I could get there at least once
I’ll sob and laugh
Until my heart bursts someday
And I’ll put an end to a long journey
Without any regret

To find out who
I really am
That no one
Will tell me about
