거울 Mirror – 국카스텐 Guckkasten Guitar Tab

Recently, I have been thinking about tattoos. As a permanent inscription on one’s body, what one has as a tattoo has to stem from a strong conviction, an unwavering commitment, or something which is dear to one’s heart.

거울 (or Mirror) is a song of special significance to Guckkasten’s frontman Ha Hyunwoo, so much so that he has it engraved on his arm.

Written around the time the band was first formed, Ha Hyunwoo got inspiration for the song when he saw the reflection of his naked self in the bathroom mirror. According to Ha Hyunwoo who wrote both the music and lyrics, the song expresses the sense of self reflected in the mirror who is broken, lost and confused.

Just how dear Ha Hyunwoo holds the song close to his heart can be seen in an interview with F.OUND magazine, where he explained that the band had spent all their savings re-recording and re-mastering their first album because the song, Mirror, was listed on it. “Just for that one song. Just because of ‘Mirror’,” he said.

When asked why the song is special to him, Ha Hyunwoo said that it is a good representation of who he is. It’s in last part of the song where the lyrics says: “거울을 보며 나를 찾고 있네” (Looking into the mirror, I’m seeking myself).

And so, he tattooed the intro of the song on his left arm:

Now, the chords for the song, from hours of watching Guckkasten’s performance clips:

Guckkasten has a music video for the original song which was first released as a track on their demo EP album, “Guckkasten: Before Regular Album” in 2009:

They did a remake and re-recorded the song for their first album, “Guckkasten” in 2010. The remade version has a second verse which is not in the demo EP version. Here’s the remade version:

Check out the English translation of the lyrics for an insight into Ha Hyunwoo’s perception of his self when he wrote the song:

Mirror

Your naked gaze
Is on my naked body
Holding me coldly
You kiss me emotionlessly

My footsteps were shaken
By your scent that used to be strong
They are getting weary, faltering
And looking for you again miserably

Silently with your ears covered
With your eyes closed, you’re dancing
With me behind you
Looking into the mirror, you’re dancing
Holding out your rough hand
You’re telling me to be with you
With uneasy gestures
Looking into the mirror, I’m seeking myself

With my eyes covered
I dance
With my ears plugged
I dance
With my eyes covered
I dance
With my ears plugged
I dance
